When peanut butter is a weapon

WMD?

I can’t believe they took my peanut butter!  Well, as a veteran flyer, SFDad probably should have known better…but it was still unexpected.

When our family arrived at the Lihue airport earlier this month, we carefully made sure not to bring anything that would piss off the people at the TSA checkpoint (liquids, gels, explosives, etc.) or the argicultural checkpoint (any fresh Hawaiian fruits or vegetables).  You can imagine my surprise when the TSA screener rifled through my luggage and told me that I couldn’t bring my (unopened) jar of peanut butter onboard.

I protested that it was not a liquid or a gel, but he said that it was considered a “paste-like substance” and that it wasn’t allowed.  I asked the guy if it would be okay if I had brought a jar of crunchy rather than creamy, but he didn’t seem to be amused with my question.  (This is a similar to what happened when SFDad tried to carry on a specially-frozen bottle of ice shortly after the TSA implemented the “no liquids” rule…the “it’s a solid” argument didn’t seem to, well, hold water from their point of view.)

I wonder what the TSA is doing with all of that confiscated peanut butter, anyway?
