Things they didn’t tell you…
Four things they “forgot” to tell you about deciding to stay home with your child:
- When you’re feeling ill, you can’t “call in sick” and get the day off.
- Your baby will have no additional mercy for you simply because you are not feeling well. (Poop happens.)
- Lying in bed all day and staring at the ceiling becomes slightly more interesting when you also have a 4-month old in bed with you.
- The Aquarium Bouncer has turned out to be an indispensable gift for getting a few minutes of peace and quiet, especially when you’re too tired to move. (Thanks, Cutemomfromtheeastcoast!)
As luck would have it, our out-of-town guests are also up in Northern California for a few days, so I had the run of the house to myself and SFBaby when all of this was going down yesterday (at least during working hours).
In fact, a number of people have commented (both online and offline) about how long our Dutch friends are staying with us. Three weeks is a drop in the bucket to us (we’ve had guests for 4+ months in recent years), but a lot of people apparently don’t deal with houseguests quite as well.
It certainly helps that our friends are very laid-back and easy to hang around with, and also that we have a lot of space in our place (in what is otherwise a very crowded city). Our friends have an infant of approximately the same age as SFBaby, so they were also very understanding of our baby schedule needs too…and they were always happy to give SFDad a few minutes of relief pitching if he needed to take a shower in the middle of the day. All those little things make a huge difference, and these friends in particular are welcome to stay here for months if they want!
(So long as you’re inviting the right people to stay with you to begin with, I figure that the duration of stay is not so important.)
Welcome to the hardest job on earth! SAM and SAD, especially when you are sick, then they get sick. Hope you feel better!
We hope your are feeling better now.
Best wishes!
Hope you are feeling much better soon, and glad that you have a relief pitcher in there. The new Canadian(American/German) and we are off to the St. Lawrence River where we will stay with lots of relief pitcher grandparents.
Sorry to hear that you have not been feeling well. Could you put a teleport button on your web page so I can be there in a flash any time to sub for you???
