Wee Little Tots, Out and About
So…now that SFBaby is big enough to hold her own head up, we’ve started venturing out to local parks, and we’re now doing more than just gawking at all of the other kids who used to be having more fun than we were. The vast majority of playground equipment claims to be designed for 2-year-olds and up, but by pulling some secret tools out of our MacGyver(*) toolbox, we were able to get SFBaby dangling comfortably from a standard bucket swing. She seemed a little quizzical at first, but on our second attempt later that week, she was laughing hysterically and really enjoying herself.
The Koret children’s playground at Golden Gate Park also has a couple of “spinny wobbly” chairs that have an uneven axis, producing all sorts of giddy feelings when you sit on them and spin around. So long as your little one is strapped into a baby carrier on your front, both of you can enjoy the fun. (Warning #1: don’t try this immediately after feeding your baby. Warning #2: when your world starts to spin, it’s time to get off.)
SFDad has found a few non-playground activities as well. There is a list of children’s events at the San Francisco Public Library, which describes a number of (free) infant-friendly programs at various branches throughout the city. The Noe Valley Stroller Group also has a large list of activities, although the majority of them seem primarily applicable to older kids.
(*) Does stuffing one’s jacket into the swing behind the baby count as a MacGyver move?

Wait a few months, and SFBaby will enjoy chewing wood chips, helping with shopping, gardening, and sorting the laundry. These are a few “favourites” of our ten months old – a lot of fun
