The Empress’s New Clothes
As part of the new SFFamily austerity program (primarily driven from SFDad’s work income or lack thereof), we’ve been looking at ways to cut costs.
A few weeks ago, on an unusual and bitterly-cold 45°F day here in San Francisco (yes, all you East Coast people can shut up already about how soft we’ve gotten), we realized that we needed to get some cold weather hand protection for SFBaby. Easy—we’ll just go to Baby Gap and pick up an $8 pair of mittens, of course. Or if we were feeling particularly broke, maybe Old Navy or Ross or Target and get some for $4, right?
Not for us. We decided that it was high time to check out some of the various import shops down on Mission Street. A few moments later, SFBaby walked (rolled) out of the store wearing her high-fashion hot pink mittens for the low, low price of $1.50. Aside from the fact that all of the clothing there is presumably made by sweatshop babies who are even younger than SFBaby, we feel like we need to go there more often.
As an aside, SFBaby didn’t seem quite sure of what to make of the mittens…but they sure did captivate her for a while. It only took her a day to learn how to pull them off (at which point we had to start instituting “mitten checks”, which is a crucial cold-weather parenting skill we learned from friendlyneighbortothenorth).

Okay, I will shut up about the 45 degree comment.
Duct tape works really well holding mittens in place. Haha!
