Worst. Dad. Ever.

No likey.

No likey.

A month or so ago, SFBaby and SFDad were doing their usual grocery shopping run at Rainbow Grocery. Everything seemed to be fine at first: SFBaby was calm and happy, we found all of the foodstuffs that we needed to buy, and since it was “Coupon Day”, we even got 20% off our total purchase.

This train of good luck continued until SFDad decided to put the groceries in the trunk. He parked SFBaby’s shopping cart next to the car and started moving the bags into the trunk. He tossed the last bag in and then gave the trunk lid a solid fling downward to close it…which was precisely when SFBaby decided that she wanted to grab the inside edge of the trunk.

SFBaby let out a little squawk and then remained silent. SFDad looked over and saw that the poor little baby’s fingers were stuck in the edge of the trunk! It was at this point that SFBaby started to scream bloody murder. (You know that it actually does hurt when your baby starts things off with a stunned silence!)

Unfortunately for SFDad, the trunk was now locked and the keys were floating somewhere in his pocket, and it took a few agonizing seconds to fish them out, get them into the keyhole, open the trunk, and rescue poor SFBaby.

The baby was crying horribly and she had a nasty-looking set of indentations on her fingers, but after a few minutes, SFDad was able to ascertain that nothing was broken and that she’d survive with just a bruise or two. It’s a very good thing that the little one has equally-little fingers!

As a friend of ours once said: “There are two types of babies: those who have been dropped and those who have yet to be dropped.” It took some time, and while it’s not a “drop” per se, I suppose SFBaby now qualifies for the first category. Obviously, SFDad will not forget to check the baby’s hands before handling the trunk in the future.

(Some of you may wish to note that SFBaby is only five months old in the rather dated photo above.)

Reminds me of the time I clunked cutecousinfromtheeastcoast’s head on the doorjam. :-( Oh and pinched his fingers…what else have I done? Too many things to name. No ER visits yet.
